New! Printmaking Workshop Series: Exploring Alternative Lithography: Paper Plate and Pronto Plate Methods

Spring I 2026 Classes / Special Workshops

Instructor Nicole Patrice Dul, M.F.A., will offer a workshop every session introducing participants to the broad spectrum of non-toxic printmaking techniques. Classes are beginner-friendly and provide hands-on experience with various processes for creative exploration. The key is to blend the traditional and contemporary, the technical and the expressive, to unlock the full potential of printmaking.

Spring I Workshop: 4 weeks, Fridays, 3/6-3/27

Exploring Alternative Lithography: Paper Plate and Pronto Plate Methods

This workshop is designed for artists interested in exploring lithography plates that are more convenient and easier to use than the traditional heavy stones. Participants will learn about two types of lithography: Pronto Plate and Paper Plate Lithography. Paper Plate Lithography uses a paper photocopy or laser print as a printing plate. Pronto plates are polyester plates suitable for freehand drawing and painting—where we will experiment with various materials—or photographic images created by a photocopier or laser printer. These plates are more durable than paper, although paper copies coated with Gum Arabic can also produce striking transferred prints that can be used alone, registered for multicolor work, or layered in mixed media. The plates will be printed on our large etching press. Participants should bring a couple of 22” x 30” sheets of paper, such as Legion Stonehenge (250 gsm) or Rives BFK (280 gsm), along with an 18’ x 24” newsprint pad. All other materials are provided. You may bring previous works, such as monoprints or relief prints, to use for layering. Some experience in printmaking is helpful, but beginners are welcome.

A $20 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the beginning of the workshop.

The series continues with a new workshop for Spring II. Stay tuned!
