Joan Brown- in her studio at Cheltenham Center for the Arts

Cheltenham Center for the Arts will host its Resident Artists opening on Sunday, May 17, 2015 from 2pm - 4pm, displaying works in ceramics, painting and printmaking. Fugue Vernacular comprises the work of four artists, Francine K. Affourtit, Joan Brown, Stephanie Cayer and Annie Sarachan who have been in residence at Cheltenham Center for the Arts during the past year.

Harnessing the serendipity of the process and the unique mark-making of wood, Francine K. Affourtit creates luminous works that flicker between sculpture and print. Captured in clay, Joan Brown's staccato facets and gestural planes delineate architecturally inspired sculptures. Stephanie Cayer unleashes the cache of visual symbols caught within the body to mine the mnemonic landscape of sentiment and self-doubt while Annie Sarachan's multidisciplinary work arbitrates between safety and volatility; secret and named; precarious and steady; chance and control.

The contrapuntal harmony between the works in this exhibition reveals the connection that working in community affords Cheltenham's resident artists. Demonstrating the relationships in conceptual purpose and material form through the arrangement of four individual artistic vocabularies builds a melody that reverberates throughout the exhibition.

In its third year, the Resident Artist Program at Cheltenham Center for the Arts is a competitive, community based artist's residency program that culminates in this exhibition. Fugue Vernacular will be on exhibit through June 7, 2015. Experience, explore and discover the remarkable works and world of these accomplished artists.
