Children will participate in a story-drama. Each week features a new story!

Children will participate in a story-drama. The teacher will introduce a contemporary or classic children’s story. Children will then use basic acting skills and improv techniques to become any character in the story, then act it out with the rest of the class as an ensemble. Each week features a new story!

Dustin Karrat

 Dustin is a Philadelphia based actor, certified fight choreographer with the Society of American Fight Directors, and teaching artist. He is also the co-founder of Dark Star Theatre, a new company specializing in Czech style blacklight and puppetry.

 

Dustin has worked with People's Light and Theatre, Hedgerow Theatre, Azuka Theatre, Philadelphia Young Playwrights,and the Cheltenham Center for the Arts Summer Art Camp program, among others.

Improv, projection, and basic acting techniques will be taught in a joyous atmosphere!

Acting 101 (Ages 10-12)

Instructor: Dustin Karrat

Mondays, 6:30-8:30 pm, Class #: C-22 (8 class sessions)

Tuition: $145 (Members: $130)

This course will introduce students to the basic principles of Acting. Students will learn projection, enunciation, blocking, and how to effectively express themselves honestly on stage. They will learn to analyze a section of script and develop a character based on those observations. We will develop an acting vernacular, culminating in partnered scenes using age-appropriate texts.

Playing Drama (Ages 7-9)

Starting with a simple object, picture, or song, students will learn to utilize improvisation and playing skills to develop their own world to explore as a group.  We will build characters based on voice work and physical choices to inhabit this world.  Imagination and cooperation will be the skills we focus on cultivating as we create and play together!

 

Bailey Shaw

Bailey earned her BFA in Acting from Arcadia Universiity, Bailey has been a member of the Cheltenham Center for the Arts staff for two years.  She specializes in improv, movement and laughter.  Known to many of the camp students, Bailey is also a very serious actor who is willing to share her knowledge with you.  She is currently working on various theater projects in the greater Philadelphia area.

This class is open to all aspiring artists of any skill level.  Students will work on both wheel and hand building projects planned for each class.  Students will produce decorative and functional pottery as well as sculpture.

Children will create 3D wall hangings that have been influenced by ancient cultures. By using various fibers and textiles, students will learn the historic background in techniques and apply these methods to create Loom Fiber Weavings, Exotic Batik Tapestries, and Mexican Yarn and Bead Collages.

Students will learn to "fight" in a safe, theatrical context.

Intro to Stage Combat (Age 13+))

Instructor: Dustin Karrat

Wednesday 6:30-8:30 pm, Class #: C-23 (8 class sessions)

Tuition:  $145 (Members: $130)

Students will be taught the fundamentals of unarmed stage combat. They will learn how to safely punch, kick, slap, push, fall, and pull hair in a theatrical context. We will also cover the use of intention and storytelling as part of a successful “fight.” Teamwork, respect, and SAFETY will be used when performing short, choreographed scenes with partners.

Dustin is a Philadelphia-based theatre artist and graduate of Arcadia University. He has acted with People's Light and Threatre Co., Hedgerow Theatre, and Philadelphia Young Playwrights. He is a fight choreographer, and has been certified in all 8 weapon styles with the Society of American Fight Directors as well having over 15 years of martial arts experience .
