Yoga with Maryann Sims

Learn and practice calming the mind, while developing strength, balance and increased flexibility in your body. All levels welcome. Please bring a large towel or yoga mat to class and wear loose comfortable clothing.
Maryann Sims is a moving arts instructor with 30 years of experience teaching dance and yoga. She creates a supportive and empowering environment for her students. She currently teaches at Cheltenham Adult School, the Gym in Elkins Park, Abington Fitness and also instructs teachers at local elementary schools.
Clay for Kids! (Ages 5 -8)

Children will be encouraged to develop their creative skills learning the basics of working with clay. Throughout the 8 week session they will create themed works of art emphasizing imaginative use of traditional techniques.

Painting, Mixed Media and Collage

With growing interest in mixed media art, the lines between painting and sculpture become blurred. This hands on course will help students make informed practical decisions about the most appropriate materials and how to delineate their idea. All levels of students are welcome. Individual attention is given to each student.

Anthony Ciambella
Anthony is a painter, sculptor, mixed media and digital artist. He received a Certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and completed the Conservation Apprenticeship Program. He was a conservator at the Academy for many years and now maintains a private practice in art conservation. He also teaches at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts.
Foundation Drawing (Ages 13+)

Developed for the beginning artist, the foundation drawing class is intended to serve as a thorough introduction to technical and aesthetic issues in drawing, covering all aspects of representation in black and white media. Students will have a solid grasp of rendering light and shade, line, mass and volume, as well as depicting perspective with respect to still life compositions and the figure in the environment at the end of the class.
Clay for Aspiring Artists (Ages 9 -12)

This class is open to all aspiring artists of any skill level. Students will work on both wheel and hand building projects planned for each class. Students will produce decorative and functional pottery as well as sculpture.

Students with basic skills will be able to further their work by exploring a wide range of jewelry making processes. You will learn non-complex metal forming, mechanisms and joining techniques.

Marthe Robers/Shea graduated from Moore College of Art, in Philadelphia, with a double Major in Advertising and Illustration. She has been Managing Art Director for Dupont de Namours Pharmaceuticals - Delaware, and CIGNA Corporation - Philadelphia. She has successfully run her own business, Taxi Graphics, Incorporated, since 1990. Skilled in electronic illustration and Graphic Design, she has created numerous award-winning pieces. She illustrates regularly for several Magazines. Her ability to communicate and grasp sometimes obscure ideas and concepts, and translate them into "client-pleasing" pieces is her primary strength. Marthe is a member of the Art Directors' Club of Philadelphia. Marthe was recently elected the President of the American Society of Goldsmiths.

This class will reveal secrets of top ceramic artists for more successful hand building. From building large, to building thin and strong, patch and repair, avoiding cracks, plus paper clay, staining, marbling clay and much more.
This demonstration/tutorial class is sure to inspire and stretch imagination and skills for functional and sculptural artists at all levels.
Patti Nelson
Patti Nelson has an MFA in Ceramics from SUNY New Paltz, where she was a Sojourner Truth Fellow. She has a BA in Fine Art with departmental honors from Hunter College, NYC, and majored in Integrative Studies, International Relations and Women Studies with a minor in Comparative Religion from Hendrix College, Conway, AR. Patti Nelson has shown nationally and internationally including DC, Seattle, and NYC (Chelsea and Brooklyn), and Budapest, Hungary. She has taught at the university level, in elementary schools, at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester, NY and currently teaches at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts in Philadelphia where she is the ceramics artist in residence.

The giving of Lovespoons dates back to the 17th Century, where traditionally, they were given by young men to young ladies in the hope that they would lead to courtship. Create your own Welsh Lovespoons and Valentine cards on Sunday, February 12, 2012, for ages 6-10 held from 1:00pm-2:30pm
Dress for a mess and invent your own Lovespoon tradition for your Valentine this year! The creations will be ready to take home after the workshop. Registration is required; class fee is $25.

Colleen Hammond
Colleen graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fines Arts and received her BFA from the University of Pennsylvania. She currently resides in Moorestown, NJ where she was born and raised. She is an art educator and currently works for the Mural Arts Program, ArtWorks!, and the Saturday Arts Lab at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She is also the Painting and Printmaking artist in residence at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts.
Kids will have an opportunity to work with a variety of different drawing mediums and styles. Have fun while learning real drawing skills!

Intro to Stage Combat (Age 13+))
Instructor: Dustin Karrat
Wednesday 6:30-8:30 pm, Class #: C-23 (8 class sessions)

Students will be taught the fundamentals of unarmed stage combat. They will learn how to safely punch, kick, slap, push, fall, and pull hair in a theatrical context. We will also cover the use of intention and storytelling as part of a successful “fight.” Teamwork, respect, and SAFETY will be used when performing short, choreographed scenes with partners.
Dustin Karrat
Dustin is a Philadelphia-based theatre artist and graduate of Arcadia University. He has acted with People's Light and Threatre Co., Hedgerow Theatre, and Philadelphia Young Playwrights. He is a fight choreographer, and has been certified in all 8 weapon styles with the Society of American Fight Directors as well having over 15 years of martial arts experience . He is also the co-founder of Dark Star Theatre, a new company specializing in Czech style blacklight and puppetry.
Join moderator Michael Kreider from Vintage Imports on Friday, February 24, 2012 from 7:00- 8:30pm, as you learn about the grapes and vineyards that create the wine, and then sample five wines with accompanying appropriate nibbles. The evening creates a dialogue among guests regarding the tastes and attitude of the wines and accompanying flavors that pair well and not so well together.
Creative Collage - Two Day Workshop, Saturday, February 25 & Sunday, February 26, 2-4pm. Collage is an immediate, accessible and uncensored path to creativity. Artist in Residence, Colleen Hammond will conduct this workshop in basic collage techniques with a focus on the elements of art & design. Registration Required -$75.

The Writer's Workshop
Instructor: Pat O'Brien
Date/Time: Sunday, September 18, 11 am - 1 pm
Tuition: $45 (Members $30) per class session
The Writer's Workshop is an invitation to read, write and exxplore areas of interest as writers and artists. The workshop will begin by introducing participants to basic concepts of free verse poetry including imagery, precise language and emotion. This workshop offers a playful, creative space to craft images and strengthen and nurture the artist's voice.
Poetry will be read and shared to show us our hearts and to trigger our own images and rich language. Participants will be encouraged to develop a relaxed attitude about writing.
Pat McDonald O'Brien
Pat is a literacy specialist and certified school librarian. Pat graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education of Exceptional Children and later from Drexel University where she earned a Masters of Science degree in Human Behavior and Development. While at Drexel, Pat also earned her Reading Specialist Certificate.
Pat has studied at the University of New Hampshire’s Reading and Writing Institutes, and has published several articles on literacy and learning. She is an active member of NCTE and IRA. For over five years, Pat was the children’s book review editor for Voices from the Middle. Pat has taught reading and writing to children with disabilities and reading weaknesses for over 30 years in both private and public schools.
