2008 Summer Art Camp Information

For Children Ages 5 - 12

The Summer Day Camp is specially designed for children who enjoy a myriad of activities in the visual and performing arts. The programs give children the chance to develop creative skills for self-expression.  Our philosophy is that there is no one "correct" answer and we encourage children to explore the many ways there are to solve problems in their creative process.  A carefully planned and structured program provides children with a varied schedule that maintains a high level of interest and fun. The children are grouped by age, with each group assigned its own counselor to guide the children from activity to activity.

Campers can stay for a half day, either for the Morning Program (9am-12pm) or the Afternoon Program (12:30-3:30pm), or they can stay for the whole day (9am-3:30pm, brown bag lunch 12-12:30pm)

We encourage new campers and families to visit the Art Center to tour the facility and meet staff. We suggest calling in advance to arrange an appointment.

Summer Camp Program

Cheltenham Art Center ’s Summer Art Camp introduces children to various art techniques, including painting, drawing and printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and collage, and theater. Campers will learn age appropriate art lessons and participate in ALL of the following activities 2-3 times a week. Different projects are planned for each session. These come together in an all-camp exhibition and performance on the last day of each session. Children ages 5 and 6 are given a mid-morning and a mid-afternoon snack provided by CAC. Children who stay all day bring a brown-bag lunch.

Cheltenham Art Center ’s Summer Art Camp is a rotational program, so each child has a chance to experience a little bit of everything.

Painting, Drawing & Printmaking
Students experience a variety of materials and techniques while working on a number of projects geared towards 2-D work. They learn about various painting media and techniques as well as printing processes such as embossing, stamping, mono-prints and collagraphs.

Ceramics, Sculpture, Collage and Assemblage

Students use found objects, traditional art materials and paint to create 3-Dimensional pieces. Students explore clay through pinch, coil and slab building to make anything from functional pottery to hand built sculpture.

Theater with the Renaissance Artist Puppet Company
This aspect of the program is designed to enable students to explore the aspects of the theater which interest them most. Students interested in performance will study improvisation, and various acting techniques. Students may write their own scripts, act them out and perform them in Cheltenham's professional theater in an end of session performance.

Swim trips to Conklin Pool - Conklin Pool is a five-minute bus ride away, and provides supervised free swim for afternoon campers registered in Sessions 2, 3, and 4 of Summer Camp 2007. The pool is life guarded but please note that Conklin Pool does not allow flotation devices. There is a small Playground and a concession stand available for snacks.

Workshops with Visiting Artists and Performers - Some of the activities we have planned have included: papermaking, silk screening, tie dyeing, puppetry and more!

Summer Art Camp Policies and Guidelines

ORIENTATION
There will be two orientations on the first day of each session of camp. One will be held at 9am and the second at 12:15pm. Please plan to attend at least one orientation with your children. Before the opening of camp, confirmations will be mailed to those enrolled along with Camper Information Forms. Please remember to complete and return these forms with your balance by the deadline.

LUNCH
Full day campers should bring their own lunch, clearly labeled, in a brown bag or lunch box. Lunches will be refrigerated. In good weather, lunch is eaten outside on the Art Center's grounds. There are snack and beverage machines at the Center. Children should be instructed on their proper use and sent to camp with change (no large bills, please). The counselor may revoke snack machine privileges if camper behavior necessitates.

SNACK
The camp provides a snack for 5 and 6 year old morning and afternoon campers and for all campers during the extended day program.

DRESS
Campers should dress for the sometimes messy work of active art projects. Smocks, cloths or towels should be marked with your child's name.  All our materials are non-toxic and safe for children but we cannot keep them mess free. On scheduled swim days please send bathing suits and towels to camp (on swim days only.)

HEALTH INFORMATION
The Camp Director must be informed in writing of any behavioral or medical conditions before a child attends camp. All required medications must be given to the Camp Director with written directions for proper administration and a statement absolving the Center of any liability.

FINAL EXHIBITIONS
There will be a final exhibition and performance at the conclusion of each session from 10am -1pm. After the performances and exhibition reception, campers will be supervised by their counselors and afternoon activities are planned. Afternoon campers are invited to view the morning performances and afternoon receptions.

STAFF
The camp is staffed by Art Center faculty members chosen for their ability and training in working with children.  These men and women are selected for their strong credentials as artists and as teachers.  We have many returning and experienced counselors - most are college age or older with strong arts backgrounds.  The staff/child ratio is among the lowest of any camp, between 1: 8 and 1:10.  There are approximately 85-100 campers each week.

FACILITIES
The Cheltenham Art Center is located at 439 Ashbourne Road in Cheltenham Village.  The facility includes a spacious, well-lighted painting and drawing studio; a printmaking studio with several presses; ceramic, sculpture and jewelry studios with 7 wheels and 4 kilns. Children are taught the safe use of appropriate equipment under careful supervision. Our professional 120-seat theater is used for some classes and for performances. The theater and studio spaces are all air-conditioned:  gallery spaces which are occasionally used are not.  The Art Center is adjacent to lovely Tookany Creek Park, and several classes are designed to use the Park for nature study and clay gathering.
