Pinching
and Pit-firing:
Ancient Methods for Modern Times
Instructor: Jimmy Clark
Jimmy Clark is a widely recognized ceramic artist and has been featured
in numerous articles in Ceramics Monthly, Studio Potter, and American
Craft as well as many publications abroad. He has exhibited and
taught workshops all over the world.
This workshop is designed to dispel the notion that pinching is
merely a beginner’s technique. We will explore numerous variations
on the method including: creating larger forms, working intuitively,
exploring asymmetrical forms, incorporating found objects, burnishing
and applying terra sigilatta.
The workshop will conclude with a sawdust firing in which bisque
pots will be buried in sawdust and smoldered overnight. This smokes
the pots in an unpredictable manner. Multiple techniques to encourage
variations will be demonstrated.

Sat Feb.27 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Pre-NCECA Wood/Salt Firing
Workshop with Jack Troy

March 28 – March 29, 2010 with kiln unloading Saturday, April
3
Cost: $300 Cheltenham Members, $325 Non-members.
Approximately one dozen participants will be firing the 100 cubic
foot tube-catenary arch kiln for approximately 30-36 hours. The
firebox area produces some natural-ash effects and the catenary
will be salted. This kiln has been fired successfully for years
and has produced some fine results. Slips and glazes will be provided,
and the wood will have been dried and split.
We will meet at the kiln Sunday morning, March 28th, for glazing
and decorating. Loading will begin later that day, and the kiln
will be candled overnight, and fired through Monday. Unloading will
take place Saturday afternoon.
The workshop is open to anyone interested in learning about the
process of woodfiring, regardless of experience, and will feature
slides, demonstrations, and discussions of woodfiring aesthetics
and processes. Participants should bring bisque-fired stoneware
and porcelain clays known to perform well in such kilns, such as
Highwater Phoenix Stoneware and Standard Porcelain #437. Each person
will have approximately 10 cubic feet of space, or an area. No plates,
platters, or wide bowls, please, and please limit the height of
work to 18".
