Painting, Drawing, Printmaking

The Artist’s Studio

Students work with the teacher to explore, develop and enhance technical and perceptual skills. Individual instruction is given in traditional and non-traditional materials such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel and various drawing media.

Nontoxic Printmaking

Class includes demonstrations, critiques and instruction in a
variety of printmaking media. Collographs, monoprints, mono- types, silkscreen, dry point etching, linocuts and wood cuts all with water based inks. All levels.

Drawing & Seeing

The essential premise of this workshop is that drawing is an indispensable stimulus to seeing. Working from still-life, models and your imagination we will approach drawing in a unique way as a means of understanding perceptual consciousness with regards to scale, spatial geometry and the nature of mark-making.  Take risks, explore new materials and learn by immersion.  This class will be held in the easily accessible small gallery.  Open to all levels.

Paper Lithography and Chine Collé

This class will explore the technique of paper
lithography as well as monotype and chine collé (a way of
incorporating oriental paper into a print). For paper litho,
go to a copy shop and make multiple photocopies of any
images that you want to print- photographs, collage images,
classical art,etc; high contrast prints work best.The copy
becomes the printing plate. Methods of incorporating this
technique with monotypes will be taught. A materials list
will be provided upon registration.

Adventures in Creative Expression

Morning Class: All levels welcome! Instruction in composition, color theory and painting techniques in oils, acrylics, collage, watercolor, and pastel. Model or still life set up for every class. Personal growth and expression are emphasized in class critiques. Please bring: charcoal, a 6B pencil, 18” x 24” newsprint pad.

Evening Class: All levels welcome; beginners as well as advanced students! Instruction in painting and drawing including composition and color theory using oils, acrylics, collage, watercolor and pastels. Students who are preparing a college portfolio are encouraged to take this class. Model or still life set up for every class. Personal artistic growth and expression are emphasized in critiques.
Please bring charcoal pencil and 18" x 24 sketch pad.

Open Studio- Painting and Drawing

Join our new open studio for supervised painting/drawing time at the spacious upstairs studio in the Cheltenham Center for the Arts. Exchange ideas with other artists. Share in peer critique. Still-life setup available. Get additional studio time to finish your class project.

Open studio is for all levels of artists who want to work in an inspiring environment. Although there will be peer support and a monitor, this class does not offer instruction.

Independent Study in Painting & Drawing

Multi-media instruction is given in a group setting designed to
develop a personal approach. Areas covered include watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel, mixed media and drawing and painting from models. Discussions and critiques expand the art experience.

Ceramics and Sculpture

Pottery: Basics & Beyond

This class will introduce students to the practice of making pottery. Beginners learn the basics of centering, shaping, and trimming clay on the wheel. Intermediate students
will refine skills in making cups, vases, bowls, etc! Students receive individual instruction at their skill level and will be guided through creative projects and experiments.

Ceramic Sculpture

Clay is a material of unlimited technical and creative uses. It’s excellent for many types of sculpture, from figurative to architectural. Students explore a variety of ceramic sculpture techniques, a range of surface treatments, from glaze to patina.

A Creative Approach to Clay and Glazing

All levels welcome! In this course sculptural,hand built,and thrown forms will be explored.We will work with glazes, under glazes, and slips Demonstrations of technique, and critiques by instructor.

Pottery Form and Function

Students learn pottery production skills (throwing and hand
building) to promote a mature style tailored to each individual. Aesthetics are emphasized. Included is an introduction to glaze chemistry and use. Clay and glazes used are both high and low fire. Class limit 9.

Sculptural Assemblage

Sculpture can be made from everyday objects that surround
us. Assembled found object sculpture can be as diverse as
Marcel Duchamp’s ready mades or Andy Goldsworthy’s
natural constructions.This class will develop the student’s
style of sculptural assemblage, from combining traditional
materials to found object construction.

Independent Ceramics Studio

Studio time for advanced students looking to work on self-
directed throwing or hand building projects. High-fire and

Mosaics, Slab Construction and Bas-Relief Tile

This class is open to all levels of experience. Class will explore the art of tile making with an emphasis on bas-relief carving. Students will also have the option of assembling tiles and slabs to into functional and sculptural constructions. Wheel thrown elements can also be included. Individuals will be encouraged to move at their own pace while cultivating their own artistic style.

Intro to Pottery: Building Pottery Skills

This class is for beginners as well as more experienced
potters. Beginners will be introduced to various hand building
techniques as well as the basic workings of the wheel. More
advanced students will have the opportunity to set individual
goals intended to improve and expand their skills.

Ceramic Hand Building

Explore a variety of techniques using textured slabs to
form functional vessels as well a sculptural forms. All

Clay for Teens (ages 13 and up)

Build your portfolio for college application or just come for the fun! This class offers the opportunity to learn the skills of working in clay including hand building and the wheel. Students will work with teacher to set individual goals. Glazing technique will also be taught. Work made in this class will be fired in our high fire gas kiln.

Clay Policy
Clay is available for purchase from teacher during class by cash or check. Cost is $25 per 25lb. bag, which includes firing fees. Clay brought in from outside sources must be approved by the instructor and a $10 firing fee to be paid to the CCA.

Fiber Arts

Weaving - An Exploration in Found Objects

Each student will work on a frame loom that will be prepared and ready to go! We will use various recyclable and reusable materials combined with traditional techniques to create a woven that is expressive and textural. Weaving can often take hours but not with the fun materials we will encounter and use to create a finished piece by class end.

Please bring any materials you dream of weaving and an open imagination!

Soft Sculpture

The fiber art known as freeform crochet and/or knitting encompasses a number of creative techniques using a variety of stitches and fibers without a pattern. Sometimes called scrumbling, this technique is a highly intuitive way of working that frees one up for creative expression.

This course will focus on using freeform crocheting and knitting as well as fabric collage and assemblage to create sculptural pieces. Students will be encouraged to explore a variety of materials and processes for their work. For the first day, it is suggested that students bring in old stockpiles of yarn, or unfinished, otherwise discarded projects, or a piece of fabric or clothing. Such materials can be recycled and infused with new life.

Jewelry

Introduction to Chain Making



This class will introduce students to the art and skills of chain and chainmal making, for jewelry. Instruction is given in traditional and non-traditional techniques. Projects will include earrings, pendants, necklaces and bracelets; learning the basics of jewelry making from a variety of metals, without the use of fire. Materials list available from teacher upon registration.
